Cydne Jasmin Coleby

Cydne Jasmin Coleby’s practice investigates personal, ancestral, and collective relationships to conditioning and trauma through the lens of Caribbean identity. Using personal and family archives as source materials, she gives space to lived experiences in the tropics as they exist within—and often against—fabrications of paradise. Employing aesthetics of Bahamian Junkanoo, Coleby creates layered, texturally dense works that fuse ecological imagery, surrealism, and the mundane to complicate idealized narratives of Caribbean life. Often working within self-portraiture, she explores how identity is shaped, reclaimed, and expanded in social contexts. By working in this dialogical space, her work reflects on the connections between self-understanding and the broader societal conditions that inform it.
